On 29th November 2021 our very own Rev’d Deborah Humphries of Perry Hall Methodist Church attended our Guides meeting to share the Christingle story with Guides prior to the Christmas season in December 2021.

Christingle is a symbolic story used in Advent services of many Christian churches across the world. The story is used to celebrate Jesus as the ‘Light of the world’.

Debs engaged the girls to have an awareness of what Christingle means for Christians, but explained to the girls that she was aware that some Guides may have different beliefs and this was an activity to build their knowledge on the story of Christmas while respecting that their belief system maybe different.

The girls participated excitedly and noisily in making a Christingle while listening to the story.

They were all given;

An orange – which they guessed represented the world

A red ribbon- to wrap around the orange – which symbolized the love and blood of Jesus that he shed for the whole world

Sweets and dried fruits – which symbolized God’s creations and were all place on 4 different cocktail sticks, pointing in four different corners at the top of the orange, to show that God loves us all the time, in the different seasons of our lives, no matter where we are in the world and whoever we are.

A candle- was placed in the top of the candle, to show that when lit, this was like Jesus coming into the world of darkness and bringing his light to the world, giving us joy and hope in our lives.

Only one candle was lit, and each girl took in turn to light their candle from the lit one next to them.

How thrilled they were to hear the story of Jesus impacting the world, making a Christingle, and even dressing up in a costume to look like a Christingle. They thoroughly enjoyed the whole evening.
